As followers of Jesus Christ, we have within us the power of the Holy Spirit that is unleashed when we yield to God’s reign in our lives. So that the miracle of a transforming encounter with Jesus makes all the difference in what He wants to do in and through us. Let’s take a walk through the parable referred to as “The Samaritan Woman at the Well” in John’s Gospel, chapter 4:5-26.
In Samaria, Jesus met a woman who had come to draw water in the heat of the day. Jesus surprised her by asking for a drink of water which was interesting because Jewish men did not speak to women in public. Jesus broke a cultural and an ethnic taboo to begin a discussion about living water, which he offered the woman.
This Samaritan was a woman who had found her security in the men in her life, and now finds herself alone at a well, feeling empty and dry. How many times have we found ourselves alone, figuratively if not physically, feeling lonely, insecure, doubtful, hurt, in need of a refreshing, hungry and thirsty for righteousness, in need of an extra dose of what I personalize as “Somebody come and see about me”.
When this woman met Jesus, she had a life-changing encounter with the One who offered her a new life and a fulfillment she couldn’t get anywhere else. Just as the male disciples left their fishing boats and nets, the woman left her water jug, returned to her village and shared her newfound revelation of Jesus, “Come and see a man who told me all that I ever did.”
This is a powerful message for all of us – that Jesus sees us as his precious creation, masterpieces designed for greatness and he offers us the gift of forgiveness, and new life through faith, and not to us only but to all those who believe in Him. This gift is ours by asking for it if we admit, submit and commit!
